Five British startups have secured the rights to eight patents originating from major global technology corporations in the fourth annual IPHatch UK 2026 competition. After a final pitching stage involving twenty-one shortlisted candidates, the winning young businesses gained access to innovations developed by Panasonic, Nokia, NEC, and DENSO. This acquisition is anticipated to significantly enhance their competitive capabilities in both domestic and international markets.

As artificial intelligence accelerates software creation, relying solely on proprietary technology is becoming increasingly difficult for new companies. Access to these granted patents provides startups with a ready-made, protected infrastructure while potentially reducing their research and development time and expenses. Furthermore, the winners establish direct relationships with the corporations holding the patents, opening pathways for future collaborations and investments.

The successful companies include enterprise software firm CALMS International, which received an NEC patent, and cybersecurity business Cyber Nandhini, awarded a Nokia patent. In the education technology sector, The Discourse AI secured two Panasonic patents, while augmented reality startup Mixd Reality acquired one. Cybersecurity and AI enterprise RS9 Technologies was awarded three patents from DENSO.

Operated by Piece Future, the initiative aims to put valuable but underutilized corporate patents to work through ambitious young companies. The program has reportedly facilitated the commercialization of more than three hundred and fifty patents across twelve markets, connecting over a hundred startups with multinational corporate technologies through fourteen competitions.
