Advances in sensing, manufacturing, computational resources, and data-driven methods are enabling new approaches in electromagnetic sensing, non-destructive evaluation, and advanced materials processing. The COMSOL Multiphysics software supports predictive modeling by coupling electromagnetic fields with various physical and chemical phenomena across multiple scales.
An upcoming webinar will demonstrate two significant applications of COMSOL's multiphysics modeling. The first application focuses on eddy-current thermometry used to reconstruct three-dimensional temperature fields within metal plates. The temperature-dependent electrical conductivity alters induced currents and magnetic fields, which enables volumetric thermal inference.
The second application examines the microwave-enabled volumetric additive manufacturing of ceramic components. A high-power microwave beamforming array delivers localized energy into three-dimensional volumes, allowing the processing of opaque, particle-laden resins. Coupled models that integrate electromagnetic propagation, heat transfer, and ceramic sintering kinetics are utilized to predict process dynamics such as temperature evolution and reaction progression.
Connecting simulation tools with practical engineering systems holds the potential to accelerate technology development. Furthermore, it is suggested that this integrated approach could reduce the need for experimental iteration and support the reliable scale-up of next-generation electromagnetic technologies.
